PhD Scholarships for Chilean Students
Chilean students have an opportunity to apply for funding to do their full PhD studies abroad with a Becas Chile scholarship, via the National Agency for Research & Development (ANID) in Chile. UMCG supervisors who are in touch with a Chilean prospective PhD student may request support from the Graduate School of Medical Sciences to facilitate the candidate's application to ANID funding.

ANID 2025 Call for Applications full PhD abroad:
Important dates:
- Call open: 19 March 2025
- Application deadline: 22 April 2025
- Publication of results: 30 June 2025
Note that the Graduate School needs approximately 4 months to prepare between publication of results and the actual start of a PhD candidate at Groningen. Ranking University of Groningen/UMCG
Students applying for a PhD position need a Letter of Acceptance from the Graduate School of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen at the UMCG.
ANID’s evaluation system, which considers various criteria to rank the foreign institution where applicants plan to conduct their studies, places significant importance on their university ranking. This ranking evaluates the level, quality, and track record of foreign universities.
It is important to highlight that the University of Groningen and UMCG are highly regarded, particularly in the field of biomedical sciences, according to ANID’s ranking. This directly impacts applicants, as those choosing Groningen as their destination institution are awarded the maximum score for their institution’s ranking. This represents 20% of the total score in the scholarship selection process.
For further details about the ranking of foreign institutions, please visit ANID’s official webpage: ANID Foreign Institutions Ranking.

Groningen is unique in The Netherlands: students who are admitted to the Groningen PhD program and who will obtain their PhD degree from Groningen will receive a top-up of their monthly allowance to the standard for externally funded PhD students during the period of research carried out at Groningen. For more information on these unique benefits the University of Groningen provides, consult this FAQ section.
