ATTP Sandwich PhD - FAQs

If you are a (prospective) international PhD candidate enrolled at a foreign institution, you may be eligible to pursue a Double or Joint PhD Degree (DD/JD) with the University of Groningen/University Medical Center Groningen. The ATTP Sandwich PhD program not only provide co-supervision by experts from both universities, but also offers the opportunity to earn a degree from two internationally renowned institutions.

Q: What is a (ATTP) Sandwich PhD?

The Graduate School of Medical Sciences (GSMS) uses the umbrella term “Sandwich PhDs” to refer to a doctoral project conducted under the supervision of at least two researchers: one affiliated with the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and another from a partner institution. This can result in a single, double, or joint degree for the PhD candidate.  Find out more here

Within the "Sandwich PhD" umbrella, the GSMS has established a single application process for Double and Joint degree trajectories through the Abel Tasman Talent Program (ATTP). At the GSMS, Sandwich PhDs are also referred to as "ATTP PhDs" or "ATTP sandwich PhDs".

The GSMS is here to support you throughout the ATTP PhD application process, and in some cases, financial support may also be available.

Q: What is the difference between a Double or a Joint PhD Degree?

A Double or Joint PhD Degree (DD/JD) refers to a PhD trajectory in which the PhD candidate is enrolled at two institutions and their thesis is co-supervised by a supervisor from each. There is no international consensus on a definition of a Double or Joint Degree. These programs may also be referred to as “dual awards” or “co-tutelle” in other countries.

At the University of Groningen, both Double and Joint PhD Degrees are possible. The specific format depends on the legal and institutional framework of the partner university. UG regulations are generally flexible and can accommodate various arrangements.

Q: Do I need a Legal Agreement?

Yes. The GSMS Internationalization Team will coordinate the drafting and establishment of the agreement and will coordinate with the relevant contacts at both UG and the partner institution on your behalf.

Establishing a legal agreement for a DD/JD is inherently complex. The PhD regulations of both institutions must be adhered to, and legal representatives from each side often engage in multiple rounds of discussions to finalize mutually agreeable clauses. Please note that these legal teams typically handle a large volume of agreements, which may cause delays beyond our control. However, the GSMS has access to a comprehensive database of DD/JD templates with partner universities worldwide, which can often expedite the process. You should anticipate that the procedure will take at least 6 months.

Q: When does the legal agreement need to be signed?

At the University of Groningen, the agreement should ideally be signed well before the PhD defense. Some flexibility may be possible depending on the circumstances; however, agreements cannot be signed after the defense has taken place.

Please verify the specific requirements and timelines at the partner institution and inform us accordingly. Finalizing the agreement well in advance is essential to ensure a smooth and timely PhD trajector

Q: Will I need to defend my thesis twice?

That depends on the requirements of the partner university. To obtain a degree from the University of Groningen, a public defense of the PhD thesis at UG is always required.

Whether a second defense is needed at the partner institution depends on the legal and academic framework of that institution. The GSMS aims to integrate the requirements of both universities into a single, coherent process wherever possible.

Q: I am not yet enrolled in any PhD program. Can I apply to the ATTP Sandwich PhD?

Yes, you can apply even if you're not yet enrolled in a PhD program. In fact, you may want to explore a short preparatory visit to the UMCG to help shape a future application. Have a look at our Research Voucher options  (conditions apply).

Q: I am already enrolled in a PhD program at another institution. Can I apply to the ATTP Sandwich PhD program?

In principle, yes. However, acceptance depends on several factors – including how far along you are in your PhD, the approval of your home institution, whether you are seeking UMCG funding, and most importantly, whether a UMCG supervisor considers your proposed Sandwich PhD trajectory academically sound and feasible.
If you’re unsure whether your situation qualifies, feel free to contact the GSMS for tailored advice.

Q: Is it possible to do an ATTP Sandwich PhD with another Dutch Institution?

No, the partner institution must be located abroad.

Q: I am currently doing a PhD internship at the UMCG. Can I apply to the ATTP Sandwich PhD program as a visiting PhD candidate ?

Yes. See the previous answers for general eligibility.
In addition, being a “visiting PhD” (our term for PhD interns) can be a great stepping stone toward a Sandwich PhD. It allows you and your supervisors to make an informed decision. If you’re considering this next step, we encourage you to discuss the option with your UMCG supervisor.

Q: Is there funding available for DD/JD PhD trajectories at the UMCG?

That depends on your situation. See the "Financial Section" on the ATTP Sandwich PhD page.

Q: What is the minimum and maximum duration of stay at the UMCG for the ATTP Sandwich PhD program?

To obtain a degree from the University of Groningen, at least 6 months of a sandwich trajectory have to be spent at UG. Depending on the partner institution’s requirements and the project’s nature, this may extend up to 24 months. The exact distribution should be agreed upon with both supervisors and must meet the academic and administrative requirements of both institutions

Q: When should I apply?

First, you’ll need to prepare thoroughly, secure the support of a UG supervisor (we can help with that), and coordinate with your home institution and supervisor there.
That said, the application process takes time, so getting started early is important. In our experience, projects tend to be of higher quality when the candidate and both supervisors are involved from the very beginning and collaborate on shaping the project together.
It’s also possible to receive conditional acceptance, which means you’ll be ready to start as soon as all GSMS admission requirements are met.

Q: What are the selection criteria for ATTP Sandwich PhD applications?

Selection is based on the academic quality and feasibility of the proposed project, its level of integration between the two institutions, the candidate's qualifications, and the strength of the supervisory team. Applications must demonstrate clear added value from the international collaboration.

Q: Who submits the ATTP Sandwich PhD application?

The UMCG supervisor is responsible for submitting the official ATTP Sandwich PhD application to the GSMS. While candidates prepare the necessary documents and research proposal collaboratively, the formal submission must come from the UG/UMCG side.

Q: What does "Conditional Acceptance" mean?

"Conditional Acceptance" means that your application has been approved in principle, but certain formal admission conditions (such as finalizing degree documents, funding confirmation, or institutional approvals) must still be met before you can start your research stay in Groningen.

Q: What about visa and accommodation?

you’ll need to allow 6 months between applying and starting at the GSMS/UMCG. For more information on visa and accommodation visit the PhD: Preparing for arrival page

Q: I am interested. Where do I find more information?

All ATTP Sandwich PhD applicants at the GSMS follow the same application process. Admission is based on the submission and approval of an ATTP Sandwich PhD application package. More information is available at: www.groningenbiomed.com/attp-phd.
