The University of Groningen (UG) has once again climbed a few places in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (also called the Shanghai ranking list). The UG is now in 72nd place, having climbed three places. This is the fourth year in a row that the University has improved its position in the ARWU, which is generally considered the most reliable quality measurement of universities worldwide.
The UG is the only Dutch university in the top 100 to have moved up the list. In addition to the UG, Utrecht University (dropped from 56 to 65) and Leiden University (from 82 to 93) are also in the top 100. The ARWU is a list of the global Top 500, published annually in August by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Because the list is based on clear methodology and objective data, it is regarded as the most reliable in the academic world. Just as in previous years, the list is headed by Harvard University.
