The Graduate School of Medical Sciences is proud to announce that two top students won four first place prizes at BRAINCOMS.
The prestigious BRAINCOMS Medical Conference in Brazil took place from 19-21 October 2017. Two of our students, Stan Benjamens and Matheus Silva Gurgel do Amaral, were awarded prizes for their presentations.
Stan Benjamens (23) is a 5th year medical student and currently in the first year of his MD/PhD at the Medical Imaging Center & Groningen Transplant Center. He presented his research in Imaging and Kidney Transplantation and won first place in the oral presentations on surgical topics with a talk titled “Can Transplant Renal Scintigraphy Predict the Duration of Delayed Graft Function? A Dual Center Retrospective study”. This presentation was also placed in the top 3 presentations of the entire conference.
His poster presentation titled “Renal Scintigraphy for Post-Transplant Monitoring after Renal Transplantation” (Systematic review) was also awarded best in category.
“Visiting this congress was an amazing cultural experience due to the diverse crowd of medical students from all South American countries and several students from other continents," says Stan. "The variety of scientific presentations and the many workshops to choose from provided opportunities for all types of medical students. With the amazing stories of the dean of Harvard Medical School and a look at the future with the head of surgery from the University of Buenos Aires, we could all leave the congress with new energy for our medical careers. We were proud to represent the University of Groningen at this event and we had an amazing time in Sao Paulo, Brazil.”
Stan attended BRAINCOMS together with Matheus Silva Gurgel do Amaral, second-year student of the Research Master Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology, who is currently working at the Public Health department.
Matheus had two best poster presentations in the Preventive Medicine sessions titled “The role of health literacy and the potential mediating function of depression in chronic kidney disease outcomes” and “Improving communication with patients using a digital tool - and experiment in the University Hospital of Groningen”
“BRAINCOMS was a congress that gathered a variety of professionals and students in the medical field,” says Matheus, “providing us with the chance to learn and to show what we've learned here at the University of Groningen. All the different nationalities present at the event reinforced how internationalized the modern medical environment is, and representing our university was a big honor. Taking part in such a congress is a remarkable experience for any student!”
