Colombian PhD student Alfredo Ocampo graduates in collaboration with the University of Antioquia.

We are very proud to announce that Wilson Alfredo Ríos Ocampo has completed his PhD programme with a thesis titled “Cellular stress response during hepatitis C virus infection”.

Alfredo completed his PhD program in collaboration with one of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences’ strategic partners: the Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia. Since 2011, eleven students have been accepted into the UdeA-Groningen double degree program.

In his PhD research, he looked at the effects of the Hepatitis C virus on liver cells. The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a virus that infects hepatocytes, the parenchymal liver cells. HCV infection causes acute and chronic liver disease and is associated with cirrhosis and development of liver cancer. Alfredo's research contributes to the knowledge about liver cell responses to stressors such as the HCV. Eventually, this can lead to better therapeutic inventions and treatments for patients infected with the Hepatitis C virus.

Congratulations to Alfredo and we wish him all the best in his future career!
