Chile: ANID/Becas Chile

PhD Scholarships for Chilean Students

Chilean students have an opportunity to apply for funding to do their full PhD studies abroad with a Becas Chile  scholarship, via the National Agency for Research & Development (ANID) in Chile. UMCG supervisors who are in touch with a Chilean prospective PhD student may request support from the Graduate School of Medical Sciences to facilitate the candidate's application to ANID funding.

Call for Applications and Deadlines 2023

ANID 2023 Call for Applications full PhD abroad:

Important dates:

  • Call open: 20 May 2023
  • Application deadline: 16 May 2023
  • Publication of results: August 2023

Note that the Graduate School needs approximately 4 months to prepare between publication of results and the actual start of a PhD candidate at Groningen. Considering that the UMCG for practical administrative reasons cannot implement new candidates to start in December, a realistic start date therefore is January 2024 or later.

Ranking University of Groningen/UMCG

Students applying for a PhD position need a Letter of Acceptance from the Graduate School of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen at the UMCG.

Eligible applicants are ranked based on three main criteria, among which the ranking of the hosting university in an OECD sub-area.

Candidates in biomedical sciences receive the maximum score for choosing the University of Groningen as their hosting university. This accounts for 20% of the total scoring (see this document).

For Prospective PhD Students

We welcome you to look at the research carried out at our different Research Institutes. In case you need assistance locating a supervisor for your PhD project, please send a message to the Graduate School of Medical Sciences with your English language CV and a summary of your research focus.

Note that it is a hard requirement that you provide proof of proficiency in English (TOEFL or IELTS), with minimum test scores as outlined here. You may find more information on the application process on said webpage, including a Research Proposal template.

Groningen is unique in The Netherlands: students who are admitted to the Groningen PhD program and who will obtain their PhD degree from Groningen will receive a top-up of their monthly allowance to the standard for externally funded PhD students during the period of research carried out at Groningen. For more information on these unique benefits the University of Groningen provides, consult this FAQ section.

For UMCG Supervisors

In order to prepare the letter of acceptance for ANID PhD applicants, UMCG supervisors should provide the Graduate School of Medical Sciences with the information and documentation requested here.

Some scholarship providers allow for the claim of tuition and/or bench fees. More information about GSMS fee policies can be found here.
