My PhD: fees

Tuition fees

Tuition for PhD programs at the University of Groningen are established in UG's Regulation for Registration & Tuition Fees, published annually on the UG website.

Tuition for PhD students at the Graduate School of Medical Sciences (GSMS) for the academic year 2022-2023 has been established at EUR 10.000.

The GSMS is the competent authority within the UMCG for the claim of tuition fees for PhD students, including those who apply to an external PhD scholarship as of the academic year 2022-2023.

Bench fees

Bench fees, within the context of PhD studies, refer to any costs related to the execution of doctoral research activities. These costs vary greatly dependent on the type of research. It is the responsibility of the PhD supervisor to assess what the expected costs of research are, and whether they have access to sufficient financial resources, in- or external, to cover for these.

In addition to departmental resources, supervisors may have access to the following funds for PhD scholarship students:

  • The standard GSMS bench fee contribution, paid out on an annual basis, for the duration of the external scholarship, with a maximum of four years;
  • Any external resources that may be acquired via the scholarship provider, should these allow for the claim of bench fees. Consult with the PhD scholarship applicant whether this is possible.
